RDS Quarterly Update: April 2017

Grant Writing Seminar

The Office of Research & Innovation, through its Research Development Services unit, is sponsoring a one-day seminar, “Write Winning Grant Proposals,” on Thursday, June 15, 2017, from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. All faculty members and post-doctoral appointees are eligible to attend.

The seminar will be presented by Grant Writers Seminars and Workshops. This organization, composed of successful university researchers, is well known for their comprehensive and high-quality training programs for faculty investigators. They present this seminar at many of the nation’s best research universities. We last hosted them on our campus in the spring of 2015, and their workshop was very well received.

This one-day seminar provides a step-by-step guide to developing successful applications for funding by federal funding agencies, with a specific focus on NIH and NSF. The trainer for our seminar is Lauren Broyles, Ph.D., previously a federally funded assistant professor of medicine, clinical and translational science at the University of Pittsburgh and a research health scientist with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. She has served on federal grant review panels and has competed successfully for external awards from a wide range of agencies and private funders.

All faculty registered will receive a comprehensive reference workbook in either NSF or NIH format provided as a part of their participation at no cost. Postdoctoral appointees are also encouraged to attend.

Please direct interested faculty to register with Research Development Services by contacting them at rds@uoregon.edu. Questions may be directed to Lynn Stearney, director, Research Development Services at stearney@uoregon.edu or (541) 346-8308.

20 UO researchers receive Faculty Research Awards

Dedicated UO researchers whose work ranges from studies of cultural heritage in Columbia and Brazil, to new exercises to promote childhood activity, to a look at Roman architecture of “in-between” spaces have received Faculty Research Awards for 2017.

The awards are distributed annually by the Office of the Vice President for Research and Innovation. Designed to stimulate promising research and scholarly activity, the awards support scholarship, creative projects and quantitative or qualitative research from all disciplinary backgrounds.

Faculty members receive up to $5,500 for research expenses during the coming fiscal year, including travel, equipment, supplies, contractual services, shared facility use, graduate or undergraduate student effort or as a stipend during the summer months.

Award applications were open to all faculty with a rank of assistant professor or above, as well as to full time, non-tenure-track faculty who are engaged in substantial research. Recipient recommendations were made by the Faculty Senate after review based on intellectual merit, and the final award decisions were made by the Vice President of Research and Innovation.

Congratulations to the 2017 Faculty Research Award Recipients.
